How to renew your expired or expiring UK passport

Expired Passport

If your passport has expired or you don’t have long left on it then you must renew your passport before your travel. Renewing your passport is an easy process and can be done online or through a paper application. I’ve compiled my guides below to help you, I don’t want anyone missing out on their holiday due to an expired passport.

If you travel within the next 6 weeks and have a expired passport then you must use a different service to urgently get a new passport.

Lost Passport

If you have lost or had your passport stolen then you then you must replace your passport, which is a different process. Unfortunately, you cannot use the standard renewal process.

Renewing your Passport

You can use the standard online or paper application process depending on your preference. Online is cheaper at £75.50 versus £85 for paper application, but its up to you which one you use.

Applying Online

  • Applying online is very easy. You can start your application on the ‘renew my passport gov.uk’ website. You simply have to follow and answer the questions.
  • You will need to enter a number of details from your current passport.
  • You will need upload a recent digital photo of you that meets the requirements.
  • Pay for your new passport using a credit or debit card
  • Send in your old passport

As you are renewing an old passport you will not need to attend a passport interview or get someone to countersign your application. You will receive your new passport in around 3 weeks going up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

Passport Paper Application

  • You will need to go to your local post office and pick up a passport application form.
  • You will need to fill in the passport application with the relevant information send to the passport office.
  • You will need to send with it two passport photos with your application with one of them countersigned on the back.
  • You will need to send back your old passport.
  • You will need to pay for your application by cheque sent in with your application, at the post office as part of the check and send service or pay online.

As you are renewing an old passport you will not need to attend a passport interview or get someone to countersign your application. You will receive your new passport in around 3 weeks going up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
