A lost passport can be the thing of nightmares. Losing your passport can be hugely stressful and can cost you a serious amount of money. Despite this, 20,000 Brits manage to lose their passport each year and it is estimated lost passports cost holiday makers £5million every year. A lost passport could mean you miss out on your holiday and lose the money you spent on it. I don’t want that to happen, my guide below shows you how to replace your lost passport.

How to replace your lost passport

The fastest you can replace a lost passport is 9 days. That is if you are lucky with getting an appointment for your passport interview.

If you are currently in the UK and plan to travel in the next week then I’m sorry, you are probably going to miss your holiday. I advise you read our guide on what to do next.

If you are abroad, lost your passport and plan to travel in the next two days then you can apply for emergency travel documents.

If you have lost your passport and plan to travel in more than nine days time then you are in luck. The quickest you can get a replacement is nine days, however, you must act fast.

1 week fast track service

The quickest way to replace a lost passport is to use the 1 week fast track service. Annoyingly, you can not apply for the 1 week fast track service online and you will have to attend a passport interview. This will cost £142 for an adult passport and £122 for a child passport.

What you need to do

  • Book an appointment online for your passport interview – do this straight away, they only have limited availability.
  • Cancel your current passport
  • Pick up a paper application from your local post office – you will need to complete this and bring along to your passport interview
  • Get two identical passport photos taken
  • Get someone to countersign your passport application
  • Attend your passport interview

As long as there are no issues with your application you will receive your new passport 1 week after your passport interview.

The usual time taken to replace a lost passport is 3 weeks, however this can go up to 6 weeks during busy periods. If you have lost your passport and plan to travel in the next 6 weeks I advise you use the 1 week fastrack service. This service is more expensive but it will ensure you receive your new passport in time. It will also allow for any delays due to applications errors which can happen.
